Generosity on display

On May 21, 2014 Certol® International donated twelve pallets of product to the Matthew 25 Ministries charity organization. As a responsible manufacturer, we feel like it is our obligation to find creative ways to discard our discontinued and slightly damaged items. Certol’s recent donation was for remaining stock of our ProTouch™ vinyl gloves, and ProTray™ disposable instrument trays that were slightly damaged during the manufacturing process. These items will be shipped to Central and South America by Matthew 25 Ministries to help provide the best healthcare to people in need and also following natural disasters in those regions.

Matthew 25 Ministries has made it their goal to provide shelter to the homeless, clean water to the thirsty, medical care to the ill and humanitarian supplies to those in need. After a trip by Pastor Wendell Mettey to Nicaragua in 1990 he made a promise to find a way to help the people of Nicaragua and others in similar situations moving forward. Matthew 25 Ministries was formed shortly after this promise in 1991, starting from a small suitcase ministry, it is now an international relief organization distributing 10 million pounds of products each year.

Donations in KIND

Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND) is one of the many organizations that Certol® International supports through product donations. Founded in 1912, KIND is one of the oldest dental charities in the country. The aim of KIND is to provide affordable quality dental care to children of low-income families in Colorado. No child is ever turned away due to the inability to pay at the KIND clinic. It is because of this philosophy and dedication to the cause that they have been recognized with prestigious honors from the American Dental Association.

On February 18, 2014 Certol made a generous donation of vinyl gloves and disposable instrument trays to the clinic. Both products will help the KIND workers prevent cross contamination and aid in safe dental hygiene practices at the clinic. Certol is looking forward to supporting this great organization throughout 2014 and the years to come!

Certol Extends a Helping Hand

The New Year brings new opportunities for many people and businesses. This year Certol® International has started the year off on the right foot by helping the Matthew 25: Ministries. Certol has donated over $3,000 in infection prevention products to Matthew 25: Ministries in hopes that it will aid in their efforts to provide disaster relief to the poorest of the poor. It is Matthew 25: Ministries’ mission to help people meet their basic needs in order to ensure self-reliance and proper health care is one of those basic needs. In 2013 alone, Matthew 25: Ministries shipped 650 containers of relief supplies to families and individuals who were devastated by natural disasters such as; Typhoons, Hurricanes, Tornados, Flooding and much more.

Giving Back to the Community

Certol® International has always felt strongly about donating our products to those who need them most. We are proud to announce another year’s partnership with The Dental Lifeline Network®, by participating in their annual DentaCheques program.

The Dental Lifeline Network has provided a national service for 27 years to people who are elderly, severely ill or have disabilities and lack the financial resources for dental care. DentaCheques is a coupon book that allows participating dentists to receive free supplies in return for their support of the Dental Lifeline Network. This year Certol will be donating 50 free Pro Tector® needle sheath props to each dentist that is donating their time and efforts to this cause. The Pro Tector needle sheaths will ensure that the volunteering dentists are able to safely recap needles used for injections to the patients. MRSA - Not just in hospitals

Infection control reaches all aspects of our lives, from washing your hands to cleaning cuts. Many people do these things out of habit, but recently a football team found that a more proactive approach to infection control may have prevented some serious illnesses.

MRSA, also known as Staph, is a bacterial infection that commonly shows up looking like insect bites on the skin.  The little bumps become painful inflamed sores.  It is spread by direct contact from MRSA carried on skin or on personal care items like razors and damp towels.  It is then easily transmitted to a person with cuts or scrapes.    MRSA survives in damp locker rooms, gym equipment and child care centers.  Many people are coming and going with exposed skin and scrapes.

Most MRSA infections could be stopped with three simple steps.  Wash hands frequently.  Clean and cover skin cuts with sterile bandages.  Use ProSpray™ to clean and disinfect surfaces frequently.

Dynamic Duo: Certol Teaming up with Dental Lifeline Network

We are pleased to announce that Certol will be teaming up again with the Dental Lifeline Network™ for the Dentacheques program in 2014. The Dental Lifeline Network is an organization that provides dental services to individuals who have come on rough times and cannot afford to maintain their dental health. E.U. Looking to U.S. for Needlestick Safety Groundwork

November 6, 2012 marked the 12^th anniversary of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act. This act has helped to lead the effort in education of Needlestick prevention in the healthcare industry. The healthcare industry is expected to grow vastly in the upcoming years. OSHA indicates that there are currently 5.6 million workers in the United States are at risk of bloodborne pathogens via needlestick injuries.

The European Union’s Health and Safety Executive is currently reviewing the need for needlestick regulations. If the regulations are put into place, the Europeans will look at the U.S.’ implementation of the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act as a guideline for what to expect. Mary Foley, PhD, and chair for Safe in Common, a non-profit committed to promoting awareness about needlestick safety, has been providing her recommendations on what the EU can learn from the US and their implementation of this act.

The U.S. has faced many challenges that the EU is hoping to avoid if the regulations are put into place. In an interview with www.infectioncontroltoday.com, Foley stated that many of the devices that were released soon after the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act passed, met the intent of the law, but safety is not integral to the product. Meaning that the product is not automatically safe and the process needed to make the device safe is, in fact, dangerous. Another, challenge that Foley identified is that flu season puts many people at risk because such a large number of workers and patients are exposed to sharps in a variety of different settings from, grocery stores, to parking lots, to airports. All of these places need to be properly equipped with sharps safety measures and disposal procedures. Regarding this process, Foley remarked, “Not only is the healthcare provider at risk but so are the communities in which those devices will be disposed. That is wrong! Protecting the public should not be traded for risks to the care provider, or the community.”

In 2010, The International Healthcare Worker Safety Center at the University of Virginia and the American Nurses Association agreed and came up with a call to action for the healthcare industry that focuses on the following five steps:

1. Improve sharps safety in surgical settings.
2. Understand and reduce exposure risks in non-hospital settings.
3. Involve frontline workers in the selection of safety devices
4. Address gaps in the availability of safety devices and encourage innovative designs and technology.
5. Enhance worker education and training.

Needlestick injuries can be prevented if proper action is taken. It is up to the managers and workers in the clinics, offices, hospitals, or any other location where sharps are used for injections to be mindful of this. Recent Donations of Note

Certol receives many requests for donation and strives to support those organizations whose mission align with our core values. We recently made two donations to different organizations that we have helped in the past. These entities appreciate the products that Certol was able to donate.

TROSA, Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, is a program which helps recovering addicts deal with their addictions head on. We recently donated ten pails of our Tumble™ Laundry Detergent to them and know that it will be put to good use in helping get patients back on track.

Certol also donated to a yearly dental mission that headed to Danli, Honduras. The trip lasted from January 25^th to February 2^nd. During that time Dr. Williams and others setup in a United Methodist Church called La Cofradia and provided dental care to the locals that could not afford to have regular dental care. We donated our ProSpray C-60™ product to ensure clean instruments and working areas in the church. We are always happy to hear stories and see photos from these trips. The trip was once again a success. Congratulations. 

Preventing Infection - Why It's Important

Everyday there are dozens, if not thousands, of visitors in dental waiting rooms and operatories across the country. We also hear about a new possible pandemic virus sweeping across the globe at an alarming rate on a consistent basis. So how do we make patients feel like they are in an environment that is both clean and safe from infection causing agents? What benefit does the business get from these steps?

Appearance can be everything. If a patient walks into your office for the first time, or the hundredth time, they may be like many people and have uneasiness about dental procedures. If they walk into a bright and welcoming operatory, it can help them relax and make the visit more productive for themselves and the doctor. Clean chairs, still packaged instruments, a box of gloves, face masks and even the disinfectant that the office uses, can give all patients a visual reassurance that they are in a clean environment. Happy patients will tell their friends and coworkers about the positive experience they had at your office and encourage these same people to also become patients of yours. More patients are always good for business, but that isn’t the real benefit behind a good infection control program in your office. While there may be hundreds of patients and visitors to the office daily, they do not interact with one another as much as the office staff does. Another reason for maintaining good infection control practices is the ability of the staff to be there. If staff members are out ill, it limits the number of patients an office can service on any given day. If patients are not able to get in for treatment or regular cleanings when they need to, it may cause them to look elsewhere for dental care and not refer their friends and coworkers to the office.

So do yourself, your staff and your business a favor and implement or review your current infection control practices. It just makes good healthcare sense! 

Certol Donates Color Copier to Local Charter School

As part of its commitment to the community, Certol recently donated its Konica Minolta DiALTA Color CF5001, a high output color network printer/copier/scanner to The Pinnacle Charter School. The Pinnacle is a public K-12 charter school located in Federal Heights, Colorado. The school serves nearly 2,100 students from the North Denver Metro area and employs over 200 teachers, administrators and other staff in three buildings at its location at the corner of Huron Street and 84^th Avenue.

The copier had been in use at Certol for several years and had been well maintained. Priced when originally purchased in 2004 at approximately $65,000, the printer can print 50 pages per minute and has full finishing capabilities to include collating, stapling, advanced folding features and more. The copier will be placed in the school’s K-8 staff lounge and will replace an older copier that was in use.

Pro Tector at ADA

The Pro Tector® Needle Sheath will be a featured product at the ADA show later this week (October 18^th – 20^th).

The Pro Tector Needle Sheath is a disposable device intended to promote safe one-handed recapping; the technique recommended by OSHA and CDC. The product is a very simple concept, however, it is extremely functional.

Investing in Success

At Certol, cost control and efficiency mean lower costs for end users. We endlessly strive to become more productive while improving overall quality procedures. As a result, our operation passes inspections with ease. Many find our processes impeccable and are rarely seen in a smaller operation of our size.

But there are always ways to improve. Certol’s dedication to quality and process improvement takes a strong commitment from everyone involved in the operation, from the owners, to the managers, to the employees. As part of this commitment, ownership has made large investments in recent years to upgrade manufacturing and plant operation equipment. These investments greatly increase our capabilities and also improve current production.

Over the past few years, these improvements have totaled well over one million dollars. Among these investments are plant improvements like a new cooling system installed in 2008 and a new heating system to be installed this fall. Most of the improvements, however, directly affect manufacturing.

New canister machine in action

Last year Certol installed an all new filler system for ACID Magic®, increasing potential capacity to nearly 70 pallets of gallons per day. This, accompanied by new warehouse racking has greatly reduced lead times during the summer busy season. Earlier this year, Certol introduced a new canister filling machine to the operation. This new machine greatly reduces fill times – our production team estimates the new machine to be as much as ten times as fast as our previous one once it is at full operation.  In addition, the production line has also acquired a new label machine, a steam tunnel and other manufacturing equipment to be announced later this year.

It takes enormous amounts of time and effort to integrate a new piece of equipment into our production process. Not only do we have to make sure that it works properly, employees must be trained on how to use it safely.

A big thanks to our ownership as well as all of the employees who have worked hard to get this equipment up and running. We are looking forward to putting this equipment to good use!

Take Us Out to The Ball Game!

 Dateline August 29, 2012 - Certol International took its annual trip to Coors Field to watch the Rockies take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Once a year during the summer Certol’s owners, Ed Cassinis and Liz Towner, treat the entire company to an outing at a Rockies game.

It is an act that is not only appreciated by the employees, but also gives everyone the chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful state of Colorado! In addition to being able to enjoy the game as a company, the Rockies organization also gave Certol a mention on the scoreboard in between the fourth and fifth inning, which received many cheers from our section.

The game started a little slow for the hometown team getting down by six until the seventh inning, when Tyler Colvin got a hit that drove in a run — making the score six to one to finish out the inning. In the eighth, there was more bad news for the Rockies as the Dodgers hit a grand slam, making the score ten to one. In the bottom of the eighth, the Rockies turned it on, scoring seven runs and closing the gap to only two runs.

Unfortunately, that would be the end of the scoring for either team, leaving the Rockies with a ten to eight loss. Although it was a tough loss for the Rockies, the Certol team had a great time and would also like to extend a huge thanks to Ed and Liz.

Gearing Up For Cold and Flu Season

As cold and flu season starts up, now is a great time to review the qualities of your facility or customer’s facility surface disinfectant to determine whether it meets the needs and requirements for your setting. You can help your customer/clinicians become informed consumers of disinfectant chemicals by considering these tips:

• Follow CDC guidelines. Use a tubuculocidal disinfectant in healthcare settings where blood and mucous spatter is likely. Some products labeled as “hospital disinfectants” are low level quaternaries lacking TB kill. ProSpray™ and ProSpray™ wipes are intermediate level disinfectants with lab verified TB kill.

• Cleaning matters. Many of the antibiotic resistant organisms now creating havoc in healthcare are carried in the environment via hands and human soils.

The focus on killing must be redirected to procedures that include careful, persistent cleaning. ProSpray products feature a water based formula with very effective cleaning agents.

• Compliance is essential. The strongest, fastest disinfectant in the world is useless if professionals do not use it frequently and consistently.

• Read labels and know the active agents in your disinfectant.

• Disinfectant choice is a tradeoff: high alcohol and bleach products are fast killers but affect persons and equipment; water based products are better cleaners, easy on equipment and people but do require more contact time.

Planning Ahead

Plotting. Planning. Yes, it is that time of the year again – and Certol is preparing an event schedule for 2013!

For the New Year, Certol will be traveling to quite a few new pool and boat shows in an effort to promote ACID Magic and BOAT Magic. Select shows planned for next year include:

 The 50^th Annual Atlanta Boat Show is January 10^th – 13^th. This is Georgia’s premier boat show and we are excited to be in attendance. The Atlantic City Pool and Spa Show January 29^th – 31^st hosts over 11,000 pool and spa professionals and is always a great show for meeting up with longtime customers as well as meeting new ones! In February, Certol will attend the Western Pool and Spa Show in Long Beach, CA where we will look to expand ACID Magic’s reach into the California market. We will also be headed north of the boarder to Canada to the Canadian Pool & Spa Conference & Expo November 28^th – 29^th in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

On the medical and dental front we will be attending some familiar shows that we previously attended. We will still be handing out generous sample bags and offering insight into the infection prevention community.

Chicago Mid-Winter Meeting put together by the Chicago Dental Society in Chicago, IL February 21^st – 23^rd; Hinnman Dental Meeting March 21^st – 23^rd in Atlanta, GA which has always been a big show for us; and the The Greater New York Dental Meeting November 24^th – 30^th in New York, NY, one of the largest dental meetings in the country.

Recent Donations of Note:

Each year Certol donates to the Kansa City Mission of Mercy (KMOM). This no cost dental clinic provides care throughout the year, but hosts an annual weekend event every March.  One of the largest free clinics of its kind, this year’s event serviced 2144 patients with $1.5 million in free dental care.   Since its inception, KMOM has donated more than $7.5 million in dental care through its signature event, the Kansas City Mission of Mercy.  To date, more than 17,000 patients have been served thanks to the generous contributions of Kansas dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants. As Certol travels the tradeshow circuit, many times there are opportunities to donate leftover product to various low cost dental clinics and other types of nonprofit organizations. In May, as Certol visited the California Dental Association (CDA) Spring Meeting, our staff was approached by the Berkeley Free Clinic.  Founded in 1969 as a "street medicine" clinic, the Berkeley Free Clinic quickly found a niche and a permanent home in the Berkeley community. The Berkeley Free Clinic has become an icon in the area, and has served countless thousands in a variety of ways during its 40-year history. Certol’s Own Peggy Spitzer, Featured Speaker This Fall

 Peggy Spitzer, RDH, MA, Director of Clinical Education at Certol, will be delivering two programs in the upcoming months. Excellentia Advisory Group, known for its consulting and best practices educational support within the ambulatory surgical care industry, will be hosting a two day infection prevention seminar September 27- 28, 2012. Ms. Spitzer will speak at the conference, delivering her program, “Clean Up Your Act! Best Practices for Detergents and Disinfectants.” There will be 100 - 200 nurses and surgical techs from Ambulatory Surgery Centers from throughout the region in attendance for the seminar.

                October 15^th Peggy will also be speaking at the Virginia State Dental Association annual conference in Richmond, VA. The program delivered there will be, “OSHA is not a Four Letter Word – Steps to Compliance.”  The conference will host 175 – 200 dentists and dental hygienists and attracts entire offices! Certol is committed to OSHA compliance and safe working environments and is proud to have one of its own speaking on the topic.

                At both of the events, Certol will have a vendor table where visitors can receive samples, ask questions or give feedback.
