OMG~~Thank You! I just received my sample bottle of ACID Magic this morning. I have terrible water problems....the hard water rust stains are all but impossible to remove from my tub.  I have tried EVERY product out there. Premier Breakthroughs Meeting 2011: Recap

As a newly contracted supplier with Premier, Inc. (Contract # PP-NS-659), Certol was pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit its contracted line of intermediate level surface disinfectants, including ProSpray wipes, at Premier’s annual meeting. The Conference, called Breakthroughs, was held June 14-17, 2011 in Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and featured a tradeshow, as well as breakouts for Premier members and suppliers designed to address issues and best practices in healthcare management.

Keynote speakers included former Whitehouse Press Secretary Robert Gibbs; economist, actor and comedian Ben Stein; and former Speaker of the House of Representatives and 2011 Republican presidential candidate, Newt Gringrich. All three spoke on the complexities of the new health care law and issues related to its enactment.

The show offered Certol the opportunity to meet face to face with Premier Members and provide information on our ProSpray disinfectants. Members who stopped by the booth had a chance to chat with Certol president, Ed Cassinis and most walked away with a virus. Stuffed microbes modeled after the likes of e-coli and even MRSA were handed out at the booth with abandon as members were encouraged to trial Certol’s water based surface disinfectants and were offered a promotion encourage conversion. Overall, the Certol was deemed a success for Certol and we look forward to exhibiting at Breakthroughs next year!

Tumble Laundry Detergent donated to TROSA

Certol has donated 15 fifty pound pails of Tumble Laundry Detergent to TROSA. Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers or TROSA is a non-profit, self-help program for substance abusers. The program at TROSA emphasizes vocational training, educational development, and the skills to help the residents transition back into the community.

The TROSA program is available at no cost to the individual. TROSA believes in the greater good of the community and in everyone’s potential to be successful and valuable members of society. Residents can participate in a GED program, computer classes, and personal finance classes on site. There are also daily motivational and educational seminars available to residents. The residents also participate in vocational training to learn real life skills to help them obtain jobs and independence.

With the donation of Tumble Laundry Detergent, Certol is empowering the residents to become self sufficient and aiding Residents in their pursuit to seek a better way of life.

Today is World Tuberculosis Day!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), March 24, is World Tuberculosis (TB) Day which aims to promote public awareness about tuberculosis, a preventable disease. TB is still prevalent in many parts of the world, affecting the lives of millions of people each year. Over 9 million people around the world get infected with TB each year, and there are almost 2 million TB related deaths recorded worldwide.

The campaign aims to inspire innovation in TB research and care. Tuberculosis is a preventable disease if the proper steps are taken to eliminate spreading the disease. Hand washing, surface cleaning, vaccinations, and TB treatment to those infected are just a few ways to prevent TB from spreading.

Certol Donates Medical Products to Feed the Hungry

In February of 2011, Certol International donated over $14,500 worth of medical supplies to the nonprofit organization Feed The Hungry. They sent the supplies to Feed The Children, who then gave the supplies to their partner agency, FoodWorks Colorado (formerly COMPA Ministries) in Denver, Colorado.

Certol donated ProView Pouches, ProE Vac, Good Vibrations and vinyl gloves. The gloves will be used for sorting and packaging food, the Good Vibrations will be used for cleaning the food processor, and the ProE Vac will be used for cleaning evacuation lines in the machinery. The ProView Pouches will be used in various places for storing sterilized and processed serving utensils.

Certol Gives Back in Honduras

Certol recently donated ProSpray C-60 to a dental mission trip to El Pariso, Honduras. The trip was organized by the Minnetonka United Methodist Church in Minnesota. The ProSpray performed exceptionally in the efforts to maintain a high level of disinfection for the field clinic.

The Dental Clinic volunteers used the ProSpray for surface disinfectant of their dental chairs and units between patients. It also provided instrument disinfectant as a holding solution. At the end of the day, the clinic would use the holding solution as a suction line disinfectant, and they found this very useful.

Previous trips have had as many as four dentists. This year the mission only had one lone dentist. They were able to help approximately 80 people with over 200 procedures being performed in five days of clinic treatment. They also were able to provide oral hygiene instruction and fluoride treatments to an even greater number of people. The Minnetonka United Methodist Mission made a great impact on the patients from Honduras.

Certol Introduces ProRinse!

ProRinse, launching officially in the month of January will complete the Certol System for automated washers in medical settings. The product, designed for low dosing in both instrument and cart washers, is an economical choice for those customers with particularly hard water.

ProRinse works as both a rinse and a drying agent. It is designed to be used at high temperatures and can be used either in conjunction with other Certol products or as a part of another regimen. Certol’s detergents are designed to reduce the need for a rinse aid in most cases, but ProRinse can be useful in cases of especially hard water
or in lab settings where a large percentage of the loads contain glass.

Are You on a Slippery Slope? How Certol ProLube™ products meet AAMI ST79 Standards

There is a well-publicized movement to reduce healthcare associated infections (HAIs) driven by ethical and financial concerns. Technicians and managers in Central Supply and Sterile Processing departments are now under greater scrutiny by the Joint Commission (a hospital accrediting group) as a vital link for infection prevention. AAMI ST79 is a major quality benchmark used by Joint Commission site inspectors to determine compliance with infection prevention protocols. AAMI is the Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation and their ST79 Standard is a comprehensive guide to cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments.

Why is this of interest to Certol International and our industry partners and clients? Central Sterile Departments are major end-users of Certol detergents and other decontamination products. They depend on Certol quality products to make their work easier and more efficient.

One of the many components of the ST79 document is a guideline statement about the appropriate properties of instrument lubricants. In section 7.5.6, from the latest 2009 updates we find this information: “Water soluble instrument lubricants, specifically designed for compatibility with sterilization, may be used.” “Instrument lubricants containing mineral oil or other oil bases should not be used, except to lubricate the internal mechanism of powered instruments . . .”

How should we interpret this statement? First, the majority of instrument lubricants currently on the market, both concentrates for automated washers and ready to use sprays, are mineral oil based. They can be recognized by their opaque white appearance as the mineral oil is not soluble in water and exists as a suspension of mineral oil droplets. This opaque white color is where the common term “milking instruments” comes from. Mineral oil has the potential to interfere with sterilization as it creates a non-permeable oily layer between steam and the instrument surface.

Certol’s ProLube Concentrate and ProLube RTU spray are currently the only mineral oil-free, totally water soluble lubricants available for the medical market. Using a food grade lubricant ingredient, Certol chemists have created a clear, non-toxic, true solution that improves function of jointed items without sticky, oily build-up. The ProLube product is available in both concentrated versions (order code #PLC) for use in the lubrication cycle of automatic washer systems and in a ready to use spray (order code # PLR) for targeted application on jointed areas of clean instruments prior to packaging and sterilization.

Fighting the Corrosion Explosion

As the day begins in your office, you are setting up trays based on the day’s planned procedures. You look down to notice one of the office’s new burs has a smidge of rust, just the tiniest of specks. You pause, but finally move on, getting ready for another busy day of treating patients.

You place the slightly rusted bur on a tray to be used early in the morning, one of the first procedures of the day. Once you complete the day’s set-ups, you are ready to start seeing patients. Another typical day in the practice of dentistry passes by uneventfully. Now that all the patients have left, it is time to clean up. If time permitted, the office staff has been cleaning up throughout the day, but often that is not the case. Today, you come back to a day’s worth of set-ups that now once again need your attention. Thankfully, everyone has pitched in by putting the instruments in a soaking solution throughout the day. It is now your duty to manually clean the instruments and get them sterilized for tomorrow.

As you approach the soaking instruments, your eye is drawn to one soaking pan in particular. That dental bur that had a speck of rust this morning is now rusted completely in two! That little speck of corrosion has literally exploded on the instrument and deteriorated the metal, but why?

Dental instruments are designed to resist corrosion, even the less expensive ones, but all instruments have imperfections on the microscopic level. Even those that start out with few, end up with many after coming into contact with other instruments and with normal wear and tear. Those imperfections signal the beginning of the end to instrumentation.

Exposure to cleaning compounds, air and heat can combine to speed up the deterioration process, sometimes exponentially. The good news is that this process can be slowed, sometimes to the point of near non existence. The solution is in your cleaning practices. Follow these tips to minimize corrosion in your practice, prolong the life of expensive instrumentation and properly clean your tools to reduce the spread of corrosion.

• Water is very corrosive by nature. We do not recommend that you use water as the holding solution for your instruments.

• To avoid soaking in pans in general, use a pre-treatment spray foam. Enzymatic foams like ProEZ foam are best because they are designed to attack bioburden.

• Make sure that all of your detergents and enzymatic cleaners have anti-corrosion agents built in to protect instruments. These agents blanket instruments with protection, from water and harsh chemicals.

• Alcohol and bleach based products should not be used to clean instruments. They can be highly corrosive and are generally not compatible with metal instruments.

• Always use lubricant on jointed instruments before sterilization. Use only lubricants like ProLube, which do not contain mineral oil, to ensure proper sterilization.
